After weeks of relentless summer heat, I wasn’t expecting to see many flowers looking their best on my latest walk. I spent several hours wandering through fields before looping back through my neighborhood, and while weeds were thriving – as they always seem to – most ornamental plants looked tired, faded or downright crispy.
Then one cute purple perennial completely stopped me in my tracks. Well, technically, my toddler spotted it first, and a few minutes later she came sprinting toward me holding a single bloom triumphantly above her head like a tiny trophy. It took me a moment to identify what she’d picked, but once I managed it, I couldn’t stop noticing them.
Honestly, everywhere I looked were clusters of delicate lavender-colored blooms looking fresher and happier than almost everything else I’d seen that afternoon. As someone who’s always looking for plants that combine beauty with resilience, I immediately wanted to know more. It turns out pincushion flowers aren’t just pretty – they’re surprisingly drought tolerant, bloom for months, and are adored by bees and butterflies and other pollinators.
This seems a bit weird, because at first glance, pincushion flowers look really delicate, floating on their wiry stems and softening everything without overwhelming neighboring plants. Don’t, though, let that graceful appearance fool you!
