How to paint a shed

There are a couple of important things to consider when it comes to painting your shed. Follow these steps to get your shed looking smart and well protected against the elements.

  1. Preparation: Making sure your shed is prepped and ready for painting is key. Ensure the surface has been thoroughly cleaned, removing any dirt, mildew or loose paint. Using a pressure washer for this is helpful, but you will need to make sure that the shed is completely dry before starting to paint. Also check for any rot or damage and make the necessary repairs.
  2. Pick the right paint: When choosing your paint, make sure to look for high-quality formulas and ones specifically designed to withstand all outdoor conditions.
  3. Priming: If your shed is unpainted or is made from fresh wood, apply a primer first. This will make the painting process more effective.
  4. Painting: Ensure that any primer has fully dried. Depending on the size of your shed, you may prefer to use a brush or roller. Paint in top-to-bottom strokes, applying thin and even coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before moving on to the next.

What colour should I paint my shed?

Your choice of colour will make a big difference to how the shed looks in your garden. If you want your shed to blend in then greens and browns are good options. If you’re looking to make your shed stand out, look for blues, yellows or even reds to contrast with the green of your lawn or plants’ leaves. There are plenty of different colours on the market, so there is something for every style and preference.
