If you’re considering growing a garden, this tip is for you. Finding the right location for a garden space is vital.

Select the wrong growing space and it could have a negative impact on your harvest. When starting a garden, utilize these tips to help you find the perfect growing location.

Here’s my quick tip for picking the right gardening spot around your home:

Quick Tip: Pick the Right Garden Location

Picking the right garden location isn’t difficult. You must consider what your plants need, then find a location which meets these needs.

Consider these points when selecting the best spot for your garden:

1. Soil

When selecting a garden location, consider the soil. If you’re growing in the ground, it’s vital to select an area with soil that’s aerated and well-draining.

Most plants don’t thrive in areas which leave them with soggy roots. Therefore, ensure you select a location with adequate drainage or amend your soil to create such a space.

Also, remember that it’s important for soil to not only provide adequate drainage but to hold the right amount of moisture around the plants. Take this into consideration when deciding where to plant your crops or flowers.

2. Sun

The next thing to consider in a garden location is the amount of sunlight. This may vary based upon your plants’ needs.

For instance, many plants enjoy full sunlight. This equates to approximately six to eight hours of direct light each day.

Then other plants do better in partial shade. Consider what you’re planting in the area to ensure you supply the right amount of light necessary for your plants’ success.

3. Distance from Water

All plants need water. You must ensure you plant in a location where it’s easy to water what’s growing.

If not, there’s a chance your plants won’t receive enough moisture. This hinders their growth and productivity.

When selecting a garden location, make sure you’re in close proximity to a water source or you’re set-up to harvest water from rainfall. This should ensure your plants get what they need.

4. Distance from You

Next, you must consider how far your garden is from you. If you plant your garden out of the way, it may become neglected.

Look for a space you visit frequently and is easily accessible. Our first year at our new home, we placed our garden in a location that didn’t receive much foot traffic.

It was easy to overlook weeds and forget about fertilizing and watering. We moved our garden the next year due to these issues. Use my gardening failure as inspiration to ensure you plant your garden in a place that easily remains on your radar.

5. Gardening Method

The last thing to consider is your gardening method. If you’re planting in the ground, you may be able to get away with an uneven area.

You could use hugelkultur and build your soil to create a wonderful garden area in a surprising location.

However, if you’re growing in raised beds or containers, it’s more important to find a flat space as uneven ground could cause your planters to become unstable. Consider how you’ll grow your garden to ensure you select the right location.

These are five tips you should consider when selecting the right garden location around your home.

Utilize these tips to ensure you find the right spot for growing delicious crops and gorgeous flowers to brighten your living space.
