June brings long sunny days and warmer weather – ideal for sowing half-hardy annuals in situ and planting out tender vegetables. Fruit like strawberries are ready to pick and borders are overflowing with cottage garden favourites such as roses, geums and lupins.
In the first of a series of clips from BBC Gardeners’ World, Monty adds more summer colour to the jewel garden by planting rich purple sedums and cerise Knautia macedonica in his large Italian pots. He tends to his new collection of tender fuchsias and regal pelargoniums in the greenhouse, and the young pumpkin and squash plants are now ready to be planted out in the vegetable garden.

Italian pots
Monty plants up his large Italian pots in the Jewel Garden with Miscanthus sinensis ‘Malepartus’, Knautia macedonica, Hylotelephium ‘Purple Emperor’ and sows nasturtium ‘Black Velvet’ seeds.
Creating a display of pelargoniums and fuchsias
In the partial shade of a grapevine in the greenhouse, Monty creates a summer display of regal pelargoniums and tender fuchsias planted in terracotta pots.
Planting out pumpkins and squashes
Monty shows how to plant out pumpkins and squashes, including pumpkin ‘Marina di Chioggia’ and squashes ‘Uchiki Kuri’ and ‘Turk’s Turban’. He makes the most of the space around them by planting his sweetcorn.
