Monty’s gardening jobs for April

Monty planting first-early potatoes in spring

By April, the outdoor sowing season has started in earnest, with many hardy annuals, vegetables and salad crops ready to be sown once the soil has warmed up. Temperatures can still be chilly however, with the possibility of hard frosts, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and protect young plants in the event of a cold snap.

This month also is the ideal time to divide and move herbaceous perennials. Monty digs up a rudbeckia and divides it into several clumps which can be replanted in the garden to make new plants for free, in one of a series of short clips from BBC Gardeners’ World. In the other two videos, Monty plants ‘Charlotte’ potatoes in the raised vegetable beds; then plants up a window box with a range of shade-loving perennials and half-hardy annuals.

It’s time to plant chitted first early potatoes, now the soil is no longer cold to touch, so Monty plants potato ‘Charlotte’ in the vegetable garden.
