After carefully nurturing veg from seed, May is the month where many young plants will have grown strong enough to be moved to their final growing spots.

Potting up tomatoes in the greenhouse

Tomatoes sown in early spring should be growing strongly by now. In this clip, Monty demonstrates how to transplant tomatoes into pots to grow on in the greenhouse. He gives his tips for supporting plants as they grow and explains how to maximise fruit production.


How to transplant veg now

Seed beds are invaluable for starting off many types of vegetables, including brassicas. Now that Monty’s red cabbage seedlings are well-developed, he demonstrates how to transplant them into the main beds. Next, he plants out a variety of climbing French bean called ‘Eva’ and explains how to sow beans outside, a task that can be done from the end of this month until mid-summer.


Planting out courgettes

By the end of May, crops like purple-sprouting broccoli are coming to an end and it’s time to plant out tender vegetables. Having cleared his vegetable beds, Monty demonstrates how to transplant courgettes ‘Gold Rush’ and ‘Nero Di Milano’. He gives advice on how many courgette plants to grow and when to pick the fruits to ensure good harvests all summer.
