Is it any surprise I’ve been busy searching for a way to feed birds and banish slugs at the same time? Hardly; even though they’re just trying to live their little slug lives, I have long been at war with this garden pest (my poor lupins appear to be their favorite restaurant).
I never learn my lesson; every year I lovingly grow plants, admire the first fresh leaves and wait for those beautiful flowers to arrive… only to find that the slugs have beaten me to it. However, I have always had a much softer spot for another garden visitor: birds – they can eat every single one of my strawberries and I will forgive them without question.

Cutting an orange or grapefruit in half and placing the halves throughout your garden can serve a dual purpose. Birds are drawn to the fruit, and slugs are attracted to the leftover rinds,” he says. “Once the slugs gather, the birds will return to eat them, creating an effective and eco-friendly way to manage pests.”

Now, I should say that I don’t expect a grapefruit half to single-handedly solve every slug problem overnight, but I love the idea behind it.
